What is a mini split?
A mini split is a ductless air conditioner made up of an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units mounted on the wall or ceiling. They’re connected by a small refrigerant line that runs through a hole just a few inches wide, so installation is clean and fast. Most also work as a heat pump for Tampa’s few cold days.
Where a mini split makes sense
- Garages converted into a workshop, gym or playroom.
- New rooms or additions without ductwork.
- Home offices that need their own temperature.
- Rooms that don’t cool well with central air, such as second-floor bedrooms.
- Older homes without ducts.
- Apartments, studios and backyard cottages (in-law suites).
Advantages of a mini split
- High efficiency: inverter technology adjusts the speed and avoids the energy lost in ductwork.
- Zone control: each indoor unit is controlled separately, so you only cool where you need it.
- Very quiet.
- Less invasive installation than a ducted system.
- Good humidity control, which matters in Florida.
- Remote or smartphone control on many models.

Frequently asked questions
Can a mini split cool a garage in Tampa?
Yes, it’s one of the best options. To perform well, the garage should be reasonably insulated; we’ll recommend the right capacity based on the size and insulation of the space.
How long does a mini split installation take?
A single-zone system is usually installed in one day. Multi-zone systems can take longer, depending on the number of indoor units.
Does a mini split use a lot of electricity?
No. Thanks to inverter technology, mini splits are usually more efficient than window units and many ducted systems, because they don’t lose cool air in ductwork and they adjust their output to demand.
Can I connect several indoor units to one outdoor unit?
Yes, with a multi-zone system. A single outdoor unit can power several indoor units, each with its own temperature control.
How often should a mini split be cleaned?
Clean the indoor unit’s filters every month and have a professional cleaning at least once a year to prevent mold, odors and loss of performance.
